Beginner’s Guide to Hay Powder

Four common questions from rabbit owners new to hay powder: which formula to start with, which formulas suit senior rabbits or those needing extra nutritional support, whether young rabbits can eat it, and how much to feed each day.

Which formula should I start with?

We recommend starting with Gastrointestinal & Hairball Care Hay Powder for 1–3 months.

Once your rabbit has settled into the new diet and is doing well digestively, you can switch to other formulas for more targeted nutritional support.

Good digestive health lays the foundation for getting the most out of daily nutrition. If digestion is poor, your rabbit may not fully benefit from the nutrients you provide.

Which hay powders are suitable for senior rabbits or those needing extra nutritional support?

Top Pick!

Gastrointestinal & Hairball Care

Helps maintain healthy digestive function and normal gut motility, supporting a strong foundation for overall wellness.

Can baby rabbits eat it too?

Yes. Baby rabbits can start eating our hay powder at around two weeks old, when they begin eating solid foods. The serving amount should be adjusted to their age and overall diet.

To support their growth and development, we recommend Joint & Bone Support Hay Powder or the Alfalfa Hay version of Energy & Vitality Hay Powder.

Recommended Daily Intake

RabbitRecommended daily intake
Adult Rabbit (approx. 1.5 kg / 3.3 lb)
About 10 g per day
Baby Rabbit (under 7 months)
1 g per 100 g (3.5 oz) of body weight per day

The amounts above refer to dry hay powder, measured before adding water. Adjust the serving amount based on your rabbit’s health, activity level, and whether they are spayed or neutered. Use your observations of your rabbit’s needs as a guide, or reach out to Bubble & Pea’s mom for personalized feeding advice.

Can rabbits eat hay powder during shedding season? Can it replace hairball paste?

Yes! We recommend Gastrointestinal & Hairball Care Hay Powder during shedding season.

Unlike hairball pastes made with added oils and sugars, we use neither. Instead, our formula combines different types of fiber that play complementary roles in supporting digestion and normal gut motility. Its natural hay base also helps encourage a lasting interest in eating hay as part of your rabbit’s daily routine.
